I'm so incredibly sorry to say that we lost Ophelia in a traumatic freak accident on Thursday. I've tried multiple times to get myself to share this news and talk about what happened and I have just not been able to.
Thursday morning I came outside to bring Shep to school and noticed Ophelia was cast in her stall. The closer I got to her I realized she was horribly tangled and had been stuck a long time in the front corner of her stall. Shep and I were the only ones home. It took us about 45 minutes to untangle her legs and free her.
I've never seen a horse get themselves as stuck as she did.. once she was free it was immediately obvious she had really hurt herself. Every time she tried standing she would fall back down. It was terrible. Once she finally got herself up I noticed her back right leg was HUGE and swollen. We called our vet right away and they were able to bring x-ray machine out.
The X-rays showed that Ophelia had horribly broken her femur. We made the choice to put her down as this was not a fixable break. It was so so bad.
